Panel participants included Scott Stranko and Jim Uphoff of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Robert Hilderbrand of the University of Maryland, and Dennis Whigham of the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center.

...
"It's always easier and cheaper to conserve than it is to restore our systems," Hilderbrand said. He compared stream restoration efforts to a Rubik's cube.

"Once documents are received, they are routed into our document management system," said Mr. Riggs.

"Our OIT services for the administration section of the university primary support is for Java and Oracle products," explained Mr. Riggs. "I've written a bridge between our new hybrid fax solution and our document imaging system in Java. We also use FaxCore and etherFAX services to route fax images and index information to a Java J2EE application running on our IBM Websphere Application server."
According to Mr. Riggs, the fax server solution offered easy integration.
...
"The implementation has made it possible for the University of Maryland to have a single point of fax service," added Mr. Riggs. "A fully hosted solution was not an option, as we could not achieve the tight integration that was required."
The FaxCore and etherFAX service has allowed the university to concentrate on business logic and enable a working system faster, since it frees the university from having to develop the communications link to the campus phone system.
"As cost allows, we will continue with the FaxCore and etherFAX services, which offer the best failure recovery options among its other useful features," said Mr. Riggs.
In the future, the University of Maryland plans to implement the fax service solution to other administrative departments. "We plan to use FaxCore's domain management tools to manage department billing and to allocate ports and phone numbers to the other offices in the near future," said Mr. Riggs.

"We want to help these young men learn about discernment without the distractions and noise that seem to surround young people - especially young men," said Father Robert Walsh, the archdiocesan assistant director of priestly vocations and chaplain at the University of Maryland.

...
Father Walsh said that the camp is not necessarily about recruiting future priests "although we do discuss the call to priesthood as well as to religious life and married life."
"We want to give these young men a chance to step away from the noisy world and consider, 'God calls me to something - is it the priesthood? Marriage?,'" Father Walsh said.
...
In addition to learning how to discern God's will, Father Walsh said the camp "helps these young men grow in friendship with other Catholic young men."
"I hope these young men learn it's not a strange thing to be open to God's word - as a matter of fact, it is the most natural thing in the world," he added.
...
Father Walsh said his hopes are for the young men who attend the camp to learn "how to listen to God, how to be open to God."
