Research Director, Institute of Biomedical Technologies, Unit of Immunobiology and Cell Differentiation (ITB) in Pisa of the National Research Council of Italy

earned his M.D. from the University of Padua, Italy and Ph.D. in Immunology from the Graduated School of Arts and Sciences, New York University, N.Y. After five years of post-doctoral training in USA (first at NYU
with Zoltan Ovary and then at P.H.R.I
of New York, N.Y. with Abraham Osler), he
joined with a faculty position the CNR
at the Institute of Cell Biology
in Rome, directed by Rita Levi Montalcini.Subsequently, he
spent sabbatical six months at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine
, N.Y. (with Charlotte Friend) and later another sabbatical period at NCI
, Frederick (with George Vande Woode).He became the Director of the Insttitute of Mutagenesis and Differentiation of CNR in Pisa , from 1987 to 1998 , when he moved to the ITB.His
research focus is on the mechanisms by which cytokines control growth and differentiation in normal and malignant mammalian cells, especially hemopoietic cells, and more recently, on molecular mechanisms involved in multipotential stem cell expansion and tissue differentiation.He
has been awarded prestigious career awards in Italy and abroad.He has been chairperson, organizer or speaker at several conferences, workshops and symposia; has authored or co-authored 418 scientific publications (164 publications in peer-rteviewed international journals and 254 publications as abstracts) and is co-editor of 6 books.He was responsible for the scientific leadership and resource management of several italian and international research programmes, including concerted actions, research and grant committees; was chairman of two Training Schools sponsored by the European Commission; chairman of the Artificial Biosensing Interfaces Programme (including 62 european laboratories) sponsored for 5 years by the European Science Foundation of Strasbourg.He is a member of prestigious international Societies in the fields of immunology, cell biology, cell differentiation and cancer research.He
has served in the editorial board of several international journals, particularly in the fields of immunology and cell biology.He has been an ISD member since 1992 and organized the ISD-sponsored 9th International Conference on Development, Cell Differentiation and Cancer, in Pisa in 1996.He is currently a member of the Board of Directors of ISD.
