Bishop Robert F. Waggener
has relinquished his
Continuing Anglican episcopacy for priesthood in the Western Rite Vicariate of the Antiochian Orthodox Church
parishioners were received as catechumens March 5 at Christ Church
in Lynchburg, Virginia, after which Waggener
was to be ordained to the Orthodox priesthood.
It was the latest in a series of ecclesiastical moves by Waggener
, and at least the third in which others followed him to his
new affiliation.A onetime Episcopal Church cleric who served in the Dioceses of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, and Washington, D.C., Waggener has been (inter alia) a bishop in the Episcopal Missionary Church, in the Anglican Province of Christ the King, and most recently in a split-off from the APCK, the Diocese of the Holy Cross, from which he is now leading a group into Western Rite Orthodoxy.
"I sincerely hope he
finds a place he
can exercise a stable ministry in Western Rite Orthodoxy, as stability has eluded him through most of his
ministry," said one of Waggener's former clergy.Waggener is evidently the first Continuing Anglican bishop to convert to the Antiochian Church's Western Rite. n
