National Oil Company of Liberia (NOCAL) Board Chair, Mr. Robert A. Sirleaf, has strongly rejected claims by his critics that his chairmanship at NOCAL is intended to enrich himself and misuse oil revenue belonging to the people of Liberia.
The NOCAL Board Chair has, in a strong-worded statement, hit back at his critics accusing them of protecting their selfish interest in oil deals involving foreign companies.
Speaking yesterday at a press briefing held at NOCAL's head offices in Monrovia, Mr. Sirleaf emphatically said that he won't resign as NOCAL's Board Chair until he completes his mission to reform the institution. He said there is nothing wrong him, as son of the President, to work for his country.
"I can help my country, if by the privilege and responsibility of being the son of the President and the trust that it brings, I can help our President succeed in her ambitious agenda of transformation, and if I turn away because it will cause me personal pain or draws political criticisms, what would be the value of my birth right?"
Mr. Sirleaf wondered what would be the value of his relationship with the Liberian people if he resigned; noting "I made the right choice in remaining steadfast. I owe Liberia, me!"
The President's son vowed he won't apologize for bringing his best effort to recreate a friendly petroleum sector in Liberia.
"At NOCAL, we will unapologetically bring our best effort to recreate a petroleum sector that is friendly to investors and, at the same time, beneficial to Liberians."

Reluctant to mention Snowe's name, Mr. Sirleaf explained "I want it to be made clear that the House member asked me to participate. The President agreed to accord the Representative the courtesy and met with the GPB Executive.
Mr. Sirleaf added "it was then, and still is now ethically wrong, for the Representative to have participated in the meeting with President and the representatives of a private company seeking an investment opportunity," he noted.
...
Rep Snowe, last week, accused Mr. Sirleaf of running the country's oil sector as a one-man show.
Rep. Snowe also attacked President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf for conniving with his son, Robert Sirleaf, to deny GAZPROM Oil bloc LB# 13.
...
Snowe told reporters that Mr. Sirleaf and his mother chose to deny the Russian company against the interest of the Liberian people."

But Mr. Sirleaf exposed the Montserrado lawmaker for actively representing the interest of a foreign company seeking to invest in Liberia's oil bloc #13, citing a conflict of interest.
Mr. Sirleaf pointed out that such action by a sitting legislator represents ethical breach and falls short of transparency and best practices.
"I will not participate in deals from which few will get richer and the life of the ordinary man, woman, and child stays stagnated," he said.
Though the NOCAL Board Chair did not actually mention Rep Snowe's name in his press statement, he told a crowded press briefing that fronting for companies won't be allowed under his chairmanship at NOCAL.
"There is a clear line---at least, some of us think there ought to be one---between a lawmaker inviting a company to invest in Liberia and actively representing said company," he said.

y believe is that if Robert Sirleaf not serving as chair of NOCAL Mr, Snow would have gotton filty rich on the backs of the LIberian people. e have forgotton how Mr, Snow wrote false checks to banks in Monrovia and withdrew them in the name of LPRC, I guess he did'nt think that Robert Sirleaf had the intergrity to have resisted this kind of offer. Oh! So now Robert Sirleaf is not a Liberian. Stand your ground Bob, Liberians will soon realize that there are still a few decent Liberians left.
...
That guy, Robert Sirleaf is stealing Liberia's wealth and we need to get him out. If he thinks he is above all liberians then he is joking. We will get him. He shouldn't thinl Liberians are stupid.
...
Robert Sirleaf's insistence to hold on to chairman of NOCAL is, indeed, NOT a welcome thing for Liberia. Does he have the requisite qualification for the other than having a contact with the Wall Street Bankers in New York, USA.as stated by his mother when she refuted the charge of NEPOTISM? Who has put money into the Wall Street Banking systems and got it back? Not a single country that Liberia is aware of. And certainly if Liberia relies on such contact of Robert Sirleaf's, the country will forever sorry economically and financially.
