Weiner is the new chapter's co-president along with Robert Shelly, a West Hempstead resident who is a 20-year veteran of the fire service in Nassau, first with Franklin Square and, since 1993, with the Lakeview Fire Department.

But I think once this gets off the ground we'll be surprised at how many fire departments have Jewish members," said Shelly, a 48-year-old father of three.
The majority of fire departments in Nassau - 69 out of 71 - have only volunteer members, according to Shelly. He explained that to become a volunteer firefighter or EMT requires training at the local firehouse as well as the Nassau County Fire Service Academy, which simulates different fires such as a private residence, a commercial structure and oil pits.Trainees - ages 18 to 46 - have to learn how to fight the fires as well as find the victims.Training is offered either over a one-year period of evening and weekend classes or during one- or two-week training courses - because every volunteer firefighter has another job.
Shelly is the executive director of operations and finance for the Nassau County Office of Economic Development; Weiner is a nurse practitioner in the emergency department at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx.
"The Ner Tamid chapter will start as a social thing so we can share the common language and multiple bonds of being Jewish and being in the fire or medical service," said chapter co-president Shelly.
Shelly said that at first his wife was concerned and more apprehensive, "but now she's used to it."Weiner's husband, though used to her being a firefighter, "still worries, and if it's a nearby fire call he'll come over and see if I'm OK."Greenspan's wife "worries a little bit, but is supportive."
Jewish volunteer firefighters are on call 24 hours a day, including Shabbat and Jewish holidays.Weiner explained that she and other Orthodox firefighters met with Lawrence's Rabbi Hain and Rabbi Hershel Billet, of Woodmere, and obtained rabbinic permission to answer their pagers on Shabbat for reasons of pikuach nefesh, saving a life.Shelly added, "When you get the call you don't know whether someone's life is in danger or their alarm went off accidentally, but you assume it's pikuach nefesh until you get there.
"The Talmud teaches if you save a single life it's as if you saved the entire world," continued Shelly.
