Robert P. (Bob) Shelley Sr.
...Robert P. (Bob) Shelley Sr., 78, of Andalusia, died Sunday, April 14, 2002. Born in Baxley, Ga., he was a veteran of WWII serving in the U.S. Navy for four years.
military service, he
was connected with the wholesale electrical supply business for nearly 40 years.He was a loyal member of the First United Methodist Church of Andalusia and the Men's Bible Class. Active in Masonry, he was a member of the Scottish Rite, honored with the Knight's Commander of the Court of Honor (KCCH), and in October of 2001, he was invested with the 33rd degree, the highest honor he could receive.He spearheaded the revitalizing of the South Central Alabama Scottish Rite Club, serving as President for two years.
After becoming interested in the Scottish Rite
Dyslexic program for children, he
devoted much time and energy to placing the program in Covington County schools and adjoining counties. Bob
devoted much of his
life to horses.He
raised, trained, and showed quarter horses and had a strong desire to help the youth in the community by getting involved with horses.It was his
dream to have an arena for the young people and families to enjoy, and this desire eventually led to the building of the R.P. Shelley Arena in 1989.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, April 21 at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Andalusia
with Keahey Funeral Home directing.
Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Margaret, (Maggie) Shelley; a son, Robert P. Shelley
Jr. of Port Jervis, N.Y.; a daughter, Sandy Ward of Wetumpka; three step-daughters, Wanda McDonald of New Hampton, N.Y., Amanda Jensen, and Gretchen Franco, both of Panama City Beach, Fla.; a nephew, George Stephens of Eclectic; and several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
