"We're trying to create a synergy," said Robert Kulp, an owner of Black Dog.
Kulp and Mike Whiteside, also a co-owner, and John Stanley, a co-owner of the building that the business occupies, have been working with city officials to get the necessary permits for their expansion.

Kulp credits a robust presence on the Internet and sales from up and down the East Coast.
"Roanoke is a little bit behind the times, certainly in economic development. But I think we're catching up," said Kulp, a general contractor by profession.
"Black Dog is my hobby," he said, a bit facetiously.
Black Dog occupies about 30 percent of its 40,000-plus-square-foot warehouse. Its owners want to lease the additional space. An eye toward increased traffic for Black Dog and a boost to the city's economic development also are on the agenda.
"A lot of people wouldn't think of coming to a place like this for valuable and nice stuff," said Kulp.
