"There's not many - if any - of these programs around," said Bob Hayes, the college's work-force development coordinator.
As he was designing the curriculum, Hayes found that other community colleges had programs on logistics and transportation. "But there wasn't much that focused on what happens within the four walls of the warehouse," he said. Paul D. Camp's new program will give students a hands-on understanding of what happens after cargo containers are unloaded off ships and trucked to local distribution centers, Hayes said. Another will revolve around the warehouse management system of scanned bar codes, which is essential to track packages within the facility, while the third will teach students the importance of "soft skills" such as teamwork, Hayes said.
