"For the person who pays attention, this is a way to save a little money," said Robert Gradoville, a tax attorney with Neubert, Pepe & Monteith PC, a New Haven-based law firm.
Flexible spending accounts are tax-free savings accounts built up through payroll deduction and used to pay health care expenses on a pre-tax basis.
"You elect to have your pay reduced throughout the year. You build up a fund to pay permitted expenses," Gradoville said.
If an employee earning $20,000 in annual wages puts $3,000 of it into a flexible spending account, he or she doesn't have to pay income taxes or Social Security taxes on the $3,000.
