Vice President and Director of the National Center for Food Safety and Technology (NCFST), Illinois Institute of Technology
Robert E. Brackett serves as Vice President and Director of the National Center for Food Safety and Technology (NCFST), at the Illinois Institute of Technology. Dr. Brackett is responsible for executive leadership of NCFST and enhancing its stature and reputation as a national and international leader in food safety, technology, and nutrition.
Prior to coming to NCFST, Dr. Brackett served as Senior Vice President and Chief Science and Regulatory Affairs Officer at the Washington-based Grocery Manufacturing Association (GMA), where he oversaw all of the association's scientific and regulatory activity, including the operation of its in-house food safety laboratory.
Dr. Brackett has also served in various positions within the US Food and Drug Administration's Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, eventually attaining the position of Center Director. As Center Director, he provided executive leadership to the Center's development and implementation of programs and policies relative to the composition, quality, safety, and labeling of foods, food and color additives, dietary supplements and cosmetics
From 1994 until 2000, Dr Brackett served as Professor of Food Science and Technology in the Center for Food Safety at the University of Georgia, where he was an active researcher in the area of food microbiology, specializing in microbiological safety of foods. Dr. Brackett has also served on the faculty of North Carolina State University where he held the title of Extension Food Safety Specialist and Assistant Professor. Dr. Brackett received his B.S. in bacteriology and his M.S. and Ph.D. in food microbiology, all from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Dr. Brackett has served elected leadership positions in several professional associations, and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology and the International Association for Food Protection. He is also the recipient of numerous professional awards and serves on the Advisory Boards of the National Center for Food Protection and Defense, and the Food, Drug, and Law Institute.

Robert Brackett, former director of FDA's Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, has joined the National Center for Food Safety and Technology at Illinois Institute of Technology's Moffett Campus in Chicago, where he is now the director and vice president.
He was most recently the senior vice president and chief science and regulatory officer for the Grocery Manufacturers Association, a position he held since 2007.
From 1994 until 2000, he served as Professor of Food Science and Technology in the Center for Food Safety at the University of Georgia, where he was an active researcher in the area of food microbiology.
