Behind the Lens...Robert Berdan [cached]

Robert Berdan
Robert Berdan Robert Berdan's interest in photography sprang out of his curiosity and passion for nature and science in his early teens. He landed his first professional photography job with a local newspaper in Midland, Ontario when he was 16. He went on to get a doctorate degree in Cell Biology and trained for 3 years in neuroscience at the University of Calgary, after which he served as an Alberta Heritage Fellow and faculty member at the University of Alberta for 5 years. After leaving the University of Alberta, Robert served as manager of educational programming at the Calgary Science Center for five years where he lead a team in the development of science exhibits and also presented a variety of photography shows by National Geographic and other prominent nature photographers. Upon leaving the Science Centre in 1996 he started his own business called "Science & Art Multimedia" where he offers web design, computer training and photography. He is currently an adjunct assistant professor in the Department of Cell Biology and Anatomy at the University of Calgary, but his primary focus is teaching multimedia and photography. In 2009, Robert was commissioned to photograph Alberta wildlife, landscapes, rivers and large panoramic photographs for the Bow Habitat museum in Calgary. Robert is passionate about teaching photography and Photoshop. The camera is an indispensable tool in Robert's research and in his travels to capture natures' beauty. Robert's photography specializes in Canadian landscapes, wildlife, and science such as the Aurora Borealis and microscopic organisms. Robert's photographs have won international awards from Nikon, Banff International Mountain Festival, National Geographic, Canadian Geographic and Memorial Maria Luisa. Robert has published more than 25 scientific papers, several book chapters and more than 75 photography articles. He has had 3 gallery exhibitions of his photographs. Robert is the editor of the web site where he presents numerous articles on outdoor photography and features the work of many other nature photographers. Robert Berdan

Cell Biology & Anatomy ROBERT C. BERDAN Adjunct Assistant Professor Department of Cell Biology & Anatomy Faculty of Medicine University of Calgary Calgary, AB T2N 4N1 Robert Berdan RESEARCH INTERESTS Our discovery (Berdan and Ridgway, 1992) that electrical activity in molluscan neurons is necessary for the release of neurite promoting proteins may be relevant to processes involved in learning, memory, and epilepsy in vertebrate neurons. Another discovery we made that injury to a nerve cell results in long term changes in membrane potential and changes in calcium channel expression (Berdan et al., 1993) may be relevant to understanding the mechanisms that trigger growth in an injured neuron.
