Telarc plans to begin selling music at iTunes by midyear, said Rob Saslow, the company's vice president of marketing.Mr. Saslow said Telarc then expects to begin concluding deals with other music downloading sites, including a new service that's planned by Microsoft.

The iTunes venture will be Telarc's first foray into selling digital downloads of its music on the Internet, although for about three years the label has been offering free song downloads on its web site at www.telarc.com to publicize its artists.
Aimed largely at older listeners, Telarc's offerings include jazz, classical, blues, pop and world music releases. The company has about 60 employees.
Mr. Saslow said a couple of different factors have delayed Telarc until now from selling downloads on the Internet.

As Rob Saslow, marketing director for Telarc, points out, "The listener has the ability to walk away from that song, immediately identify what it is and, sometimes, who sang it.

...
"The general perception is that they have the potential to sell more," Saslow admits.
...
"I think the beauty-and sort of the unbeauty-of the record business is that there's a danger in going into situations with too much market research and saying this is the way it's supposed to work," says Saslow.
...
Saslow had been optimistic that using Marcus Miller's affiliation as Luther Vandross' producer would help the release of The Ozell Tapes (Telarc).
