WAU 11, July 2016 [Gurtong] - The Health Minister of South Sudan, Dr.Riek Gai Kok has said that years of conflict in the country have affected children.
The minister made the remarks in Wau State while urging the State government to reopen schools after being shut down following fights in the State since last month. "When the conflict broke out in 2013, many schools in Upper Nile State especially in the areas of Nuer communities were closedown because these areas were the most affected places by the conflict and right now, they are not functioning. This means Nuer children who are suppose in the coming years to have education benefits with other children who were not affected in 2013 will not have a chance," said Kok. He further criticised those who are instigating the war in the country adding that it only affects the common. "The war has just affected common men in the region who have no wealth but those who were inciting the war, their children were free their getting their studies outside the country," he said. He however, said there is a need to open up schools at the POCs so that children can continue with their studies. "If these people in Wau have chosen to remain at the POCs, then there is a need for schools to continue operating such that those children at the churches and UN camps have access to schools," he said.
