Trans-Expedite, an El Paso transportation and logistics company serving the maquila dora industry, laid off nine people last year because of the slowdown in trade activity, which began in late 2008, said Rick Moya, vice president of operations for the 9-year-old company.
It now employs 92 people in five offices in Texas, Illinois and Indiana, including 73 in El Paso. "We saw some transportation companies close down completely last year," Moya said. Moya said Trans-Expedite saw its business increase 16 to 18 percent in the first quarter. "I don't think 2010 will be a banner year, but a transition year," Moya said.
