- Rick Conner receives the 2008 Civil Engineering Alumni Achievement Award
West Lafayette, Indiana -- Congratulations to our very own Rick Conner, who is a 2008 winner of Purdue University's prestigious Civil Engineering Alumni Achievement Award. The Civil Engineering faculty makes this award based on recipients' career achievements and contributions to the civil engineering profession. With this award, Rick joins an elite group of Purdue alumni (including our founder, Jim Wurster) who have made significant contributions to the civil engineering profession. The following career highlights show why Rick was an obvious choice for this award. Rick began his engineering career right here at American Structurepoint at age 16, working part-time as an apprentice drafter, blueprint boy, and deliveryman. (The firm was called American Consulting Engineers, then, and had 12 employees). Those experiences directly led to Rick enrolling at Purdue University and choosing civil engineering. While at school, Rick continued working at American Structurepoint as an engineer's assistant, surveyor, and bridge inspector. Upon graduation, he began work as a structural engineer in our Bridge Department, designing projects like SR 912 in East Chicago. Rick was also instrumental in creating and managing a separate "Building" Structural Department, and in 1983 he was promoted to vice president. In 1986 Rick became interim head of the Architectural Department, a role he still considers one of the best experiences of his career. Rick became a principal owner of the firm in 1987, and in 1991 was named president and COO. Under his leadership, we've outpaced the competition, growing from $3M in sales and 46 employees in 1987 to nearly $60M and a staff of 300 today. Rick has been responsible for the design and management of our IT group, which has grown from a single desktop in 1974 to a 10-person department that not only supports American Structurepoint, but has become a recognized technology "enterprise" with a volume approaching $1M. His energy and entrepreneurial spirit have encouraged and expanded other capabilities within the firm-design/build, architecture, forensics, traffic engineering, and graphics, to name a few. Over the years, Rick has been involved in many of our high-profile projects, including: Keystone Parkway in Carmel - Rick is currently principal-in-charge of this first-of-a-kind project In addition to all of his work here at American Structurepoint, Rick serves with numerous professional and community organizations. He is a past board member and president of ACEC Indiana, as well as the chairman of the Noblesville Housing Authority, a vestry member at St. Michael's Episcopal Church, and the treasurer of Purdue's Theta Chi Fraternity alumni organization. Congratulations, Rick, on receiving this recognition of your work as a civil engineer, and thanks for all you've done to make American Structurepoint such a driving force in the industry. [cached]

At the age of 16, Rick Conner was already pursuing a career in engineering.
He worked part time as an apprentice drafter, blueprint boy, and deliveryman at the very company that would eventually name him president and CEO. With more than 40 years of experience, American Structurepoint's Rick Conner has won numerous awards and Engineering New-Record has recognized his company as a Top 500 engineering firm for 19 straight years. But it's this latest award that highlights his ability as a leader and a mentor. "I'm humbled that I was selected among the best and brightest in the industry," said Conner. "No one wins an award like this by themselves-I credit my family, the people who make up this company, and the Purdue faculty." On February 20, 2015, Rick Conner was presented with the 2015 Purdue University College of Engineering Distinguished Engineering Alumni Award. This award was presented to eight individuals who have distinguished themselves in ways that "reflect favorably on Purdue University, the engineering profession, or society in general," according to Purdue University's website. Conner is also being recognized for his commitment to the engineering field, as well as community outreach. He gives back as a member of the Civil Engineering Industrial Advisory Council and serves as a mentor for several high school students interested in the engineering field. "When I walked onto campus, I already knew what I wanted to do," said Conner. "That's why I like to serve as a mentor to high school students. I want to show my enthusiasm for the industry and inspire them to pursue a career in civil engineering." The award was hosted at the Purdue Memorial Union on Friday, February 20. To be eligible for this award, the recipient must have previously received their school's alumni award. Conner was a recipient of the 2007 Purdue University School of Civil Engineering Alumni Achievement Award.

As American Structurepoint President Willis "Rick" Conner noted in a blog post last year, the firm is "part of one of the biggest transportation infrastructure P3 projects in the country, the Louisville-Southern Indiana Ohio River Bridges East End Crossing project."
"Kendra is a huge asset to our firm, as she brings a wealth of knowledge to the team and has been instrumental in realizing high-profile projects," Conner said. [cached]

American Structurepoint President and COO Rick Conner is excited to have Marcus leading the new team of locally hired staff members, as they offer even more services to their clients in North Carolina.
"Marcus is already invested and committed to bringing quality services to his clients, "said Conner.
