It's a hot 90-degree day in downtown Buffalo as Father Richard "Duke" Zajac watches a bunch of kids play baseball in the Buffalo Bisons' home park, Coca-Cola Field.

...
Father Zajac said there is an advantage in running a fall baseball organization.
"We have pretty much free reign on all the diamonds in the fall," he said.
...
"He put an all points bulletin out for those interested in preserving and saving the league," Father Zajac said.
...
"It was difficult to coordinate not only because schools weren't as willing to participate but there was so much conflict for the diamonds with the high schools," said Father Zajac, also mentioning field trip conflicts. "About 10 years ago I decided that was enough of the spring tournament, but I really wanted the kids to participate in this setting, and that's when I organized the all-star game."
The all-star game includes the top three players from the association's championship teams, as well as one player from the second-place finishers around the leagues. Despite the Eastern and Western team names, Father Zajac comprises the team rosters without any thought to geography. Each league's championship coaches serve as the honorary coaches for the teams.
"Ironically, we've never had a rainout," Father Zajac said of the all-star game.
...
"We've allowed girls to play in this league for about 25 years, long before it became fashionable," Father Zajac said.
...
"The last two years, we've been on our own," Father Zajac said. "We've been fortunate with some fundraising efforts and the raising of our franchise fees to continue without a sponsor at this point."
A member of the board since its inception, Father Zajac is one of only three original members remaining. He has served as president of the association for the past 15 years, along with vice president Paul Quagliana and secretary Fran Cleary.
A former ballplayer himself, Father Zajac stopped playing baseball in his youth and pursued his vocation at St. John Vianney Seminary, now known as Christ the King, in East Aurora.
"I wasn't a stellar fielder or hitter, but I was good enough to start," Father Zajac said.
...
"The fact that he asked me gave me pause," Father Zajac said. "The fact that I said yes meant a door in my life has been opened that's been filled with blessings. I always tell people never to be afraid to ask people to do something, because you could be doing for them what Dr. Steve Gladys did for me. That's been the joy of doing this thing."
Over the years, Father Zajac has helped organize the association's playoff schedule and coached several teams before he was called to be the chaplain at Sisters of Charity Hospital in Buffalo - an assignment he found out about while coaching third base during a game. He continued to serve in the association in an administrative capacity and was inducted in the Western New York Baseball Hall of Fame for his work in 2007.
"I like the game more as a participant than as a spectator," he said. "I've always enjoyed coaching and found it's been a great tool to teach kids discipline, work together and how to deal with life through the ups and downs of the game."
Father Zajac has worked in the league so long that he's seen generations come through.
"A lot of the kids I coached during the early years in Black Rock, I did their weddings, baptized their children and are now even marrying some of their kids," he said.
