U.S. District Judge Robert E. Payne imposed a lower sentence than the five-year maximum called for under a plea agreement between former lawyer Richard B. Simring, once the chief legal officer of Okun Holdings Inc., and the government.
His wife later died, and Simring is now the sole parent of their 6-year-old son and 15-month-old daughter. Coleman, Field and Simring all had clean records before their involvement with Okun. An order was not entered yesterday, but Payne indicated that Simring, now said to be indigent, will have to pay about $4.3 million in restitution after his release.

Richard B. Simring, a lawyer who was the chief legal officer of Okun Holdings, was also to have been sentenced yesterday.
He pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit mail fraud and money laundering. However, Payne said he wanted a mental-health evaluation conducted of Simring, who has a history of depression and was said to have been under a great deal of family stress at the times the crimes were committed. A new sentencing date for Simring has not been set. Simring remains free until his sentencing.
