Saugatuck Dunes Coastal Alliance : About

saugatuckdunescoastalalliance.com [cached]

The evening will feature a presentation by renowned conservation designer Richard Shaw, founder of Design Workshop, on how his firm has approached design on sensitive landscapes while seeking balanced solutions for development, ecological integrity, historic sites, community values, and regional economics.
As we've said to Cottage Home, 'If you are going to develop the Wild Heart of Saugatuck, surrounded by all these publicly-funded natural areas, then let's make sure you get it right.' That's why we want to begin with the history of the land and then have Richard Shaw, an internationally renowned conservation designer, talk about how he approaches a balanced design within a cultural landscape like the Saugatuck Dunes. This is a great opportunity for Jeff and Peg Padnos, and Cottage Home to get another perspective on how to balance development with community values, ecological integrity, and significant historic sites." The Coastal Alliance was formed in 2007 to proactively support the goals and policies of the Tri-Community Master Plan. In the past ten years they were embattled in a federal lawsuit filed by the late Aubrey McClendon to overturn locally-determined zoning, advocated for the Saugatuck Dunes to be named One of America's Eleven Most Endangered Places by the National Trust, led an effort that saw over 2,000 letters sent to the DEQ, and most recently were part of a private/public partnership that bid on the former McClendon property. Richard Shaw, a nationally recognized leader in conservation design and landscape architecture, is one of the founders of Design Workshop. Shaw is an alumni of the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University, where he was awarded the Jacob Weidenman Traveling Fellowship. His work in both small-scale residential garden design and large-scale resort redevelopment, planning and design has garnered many awards and commendations. Richard is a fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects and has served with both the Landscape Architecture Foundation and the American Institute of Certified Planners. "The idea behind the master plan has always been to retain natural resources while accommodating low-density development; synthesizing aspects of sustainability, conservation, and ecotourism for a result that will really create unprecedented character" - Richard Shaw, FASLA, a Principal and Partner at Design Workshop
