County Judge Nate McDonald, county ..., 14 Mar 2007 [cached]
County Judge Nate McDonald, county commissioners Dan Pustka and David Woodson, Bay City Mayor Richard Knapik, Bay City councilmen Joe Enoch and Brent Marceaux, Palacios Mayor Joe Morton and District Judge Craig Estlinbaum were among the main officials in the county's delegation of about 40 Matagorda County residents.
McDonald, Knapik and Morton all had different reasons - but consistent in seeking state help and access - for attending Matagorda County Day in Austin.
Tuesday marked the eighth time for this event that started in 1993, said Knapik, who helped organize the inaugural event as Bay City Chamber of Commerce president.
Mitch Thames, the chamber's president now, "put together a nice cross representation of people from across the county," Knapik said.
Knapik noted that Thames' knowledge of the capitol extends beyond coordinating Matagorda County Day."His lobbying experience brings new dimension to his job - he knows a lot of people," Knapik said.
Tuesday's event benefits Matagorda County because "we all stay in good contact with legislators. If we don't, there is a tendency (for state officials) to forget about us and this is a good way of tracking our progress.
"You've got to be a player," Knapik said.

Mayor Richard Knapik opened the meeting with the city's vision and the strategic goals to bring about the necessary changes.
"Prior to being mayor I served as Bay City Chamber of Commerce president for 12 years, and during those years I attended chamber retreats, and the first thing that we did in every session we held was to read our mission statement," said Knapik."The mission statement is our guiding light, our beacon, our roadmap and our core values."
City of Bay City's mission statement is, "The city of Bay City is a community that fosters future economic growth, delivers quality municipal services and is the gateway to the great outdoors. We encourage access to our unique historical and agricultural resources, while maintaining our small town Texas charm."
Knapik said that from the mission statement the city developed its strategic goals. The three strategic goals are future economic growth, maintaining infrastructure and tourism.
"One of the keys to the puzzle for promoting the economy in Matagorda County is to foster future economic growth by building economic partnerships," said Knapik."No one entity can do it alone. We also need to continually improve our infrastructure by expanding our tax base.We need to retain our old businesses as well as attract new businesses."
Knapik said the city would strive to deliver quality service in a healthy and safe environment by consolidating its assets.
"One of the ways that we have done that is by moving the building department into the Public Works warehouse," said Knapik.

Bay City - Richard Knapik, president of the Bay City Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture, confirmed Monday that he's throwing his hat in the ring for the 2004 mayor's race.
"I fully intend to run for mayor," Knapik said in an interview at the Tribune offices.
Knapik said that he is running to give back to the community he's called home since 1979.
"I'm running because Bay City opened its arms and heart to me, and I think the best way I can repay Bay City is to leave it a better place than I found it," he said.
Knapik was manager of Bay City Plumbing Supply from 1980 to 1991, and chamber president since August 1991.
"I've accomplished a lot as chamber president," Knapik said.
