The Melbourne Model represents a curriculum transformation that is possibly without precedent in Australian Higher Education. Richard James will describe the pedagogical objectives underpinning the Melbourne Model and the issues and challenges that have been associated with the conversion of educational gaols into curriculum realities. The presentation will include an analysis of the interdisciplinary component of the Melbourne Model, known as the the 'breadth' component, and will focus on what other institutions might learn from the Melbourne experience. Professor Richard James is Director of the University of Melbourne's Centre for the Study of Higher Education. His research program covers a number of areas in the field of higher education. He presently holds an ARC Discovery Grant to examine the effects of disciplinary cultures on academics' assumptions about and approaches to teaching and learning.
