Practicing excellence: Dr. Hart approaches 300th Whipple procedure
Surgery represents the only chance for a cure, and St. Joe's is a centre of excellence as designated by Cancer Care Ontario for all hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery, thanks to our physicians like Dr. Hart. The Whipple, or pancreaticoduodenectomy, is one of the most challenging operations performed by cancer surgeons; known as a "marathon surgery," most surgeons might perform ten such cases in an average year of practice. Dr. Richard Hart, a Surgical Oncologist specializing in hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery at St. Joseph's Health Centre for the past 15 years, has performed almost 300. A Whipple procedure involves removal of a portion of the pancreas, bile duct, gallbladder, stomach and duodenum. Resecting aggressive cancers (as well as benign or pre-malignant tumours) from this part of the body is a delicate art, walking a line between eradicating every trace of tumor while avoiding and sometimes resecting and reconstructing critical blood vessels. The operation is a surgical tour de force and requires focused and dedicated work from every member of the surgical team in the Operating Room, the Intensive Care Unit and wards and clinics. Dr. Hart is quick to recognize the contributions of every member of the team: "I couldn't do what I do without the OR staff, the residents, the ICU, the floor nurses and the surgical nutritionists. There are a lot of people involved and that enables us to be a recognized as a centre of excellence," he said. It can sometimes take surgeons an entire career to be able to perform these surgeries because of the level of precision required. As a tertiary-care (highly specialized - requiring referral from other specialists) teaching health centre, St. Joe's offers medical residents training with Dr. Hart the unique advantage of being able to learn in the operating room as he performs these highly-skilled surgeries. Dr. Hart teaches and mentors residents, imparting lessons on the importance of precise technical execution, full focus and sound decision-making. He has been recognized as a renowned educator in the division of general surgery at the University of Toronto, with which St. Joe's is affiliated as a teaching surgical program. "Dr. Hart's unique blend of patience, passion and guidance allows us as residents to unlock our potential and grow as training surgeons," said Emily Partridge, Senior Resident on the Hepatobiliary Surgery Oncology service at St. Joe's. "I love teaching within the operating room," said Dr. Hart. "Our goal is to teach a skillset - we're here to teach the art of surgery. My ethos, passion for excellence, is fully encompassed when teaching surgical technique" A diagnosis of pancreatic cancer is a life-altering event, but a chance for a cure is a life-shaping one. Dr. Hart and his team care for every patient with immense focus and compassion, and take pride in the outstanding quality of patient care delivered at St. Joe's. "I'm proud of the ability to provide an exceptionally high quality service for our patients," he said.
