Dr. Richard Channick, Director, Pulmonary Hypertension and Thromboendarterectomy Program, Massachusetts General Hospital Dr. Richard Channick is Director of the Pulmonary Hypertension and Thromboendarterectomy Program at Massachusetts General Hospital and Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Channick received his medical degree at Temple University Medical School, where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. He did his residency and was chief resident at University of Massachusetts Medical Center. He did a Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship at University of California, San Diego Medical Center. Dr. Channick has served on the steering committees for several pivotal clinical trials in pulmonary hypertension and lectures nationally and internationally.

Richard Channick, MD is currently the Director of the Pulmonary Hypertension and Thromboendarterectomy program at Massachusetts General Hospital. He received his BA from Connecticut College and later received his MD from Temple University School of Medicine. Dr. Channick began his internship in medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in 1984 and went on to complete his residency there. In that same year, Dr. Channick became a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. He later completed his fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care in 1991 at UCSD Medical Center. In 1988 he was awarded title of American Thoracic Society Research Fellow and he became a Clinical Instructor of Medicine in the Pulmonary and Critical Care Division at UCSD. He was promoted to Assistant Professor of Medicine and was again promoted in 1998 to the Associate Professor of Medicine. Dr. Channick went on to become the Professor of Clinical Medicine of the Pulmonary and Critical Care Unit in 2006 and he then became the Director of the Pulmonary and Thromboendarterectomy Program at Massachusetts General Hospital in 2009. He also serves as an Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Channick has served on over 25 committees and he currently sits on the Education Committee (Pulmonary Division) and the ACCP Pulmonary Vascular Network Steering Committee. He has also served on the Executive Committee for the Pulmonary and Critical Care Division at UCSD and he served on the Flolan Advisory Board in 1998. He is the Chair of the Scientific Leadership Council.
Dr. Channick is the past Editor-in-Chief of Advances in Pulmonary Hypertension, PHA's medical journal. He has authored or co-authored 60 original articles and has participated in 27 invited articles, reviews and chapters. He also has been invited to speak at over 60 lectures, seminars and courses.

"The need for improved monitoring of these patients is especially important, as the various types of pulmonary hypertension are more prevalent than previously thought," said Richard Channick, MD, director of Massachusetts General Hospital's Pulmonary Hypertension and Thromboendarterectomy Program, in a news release.

Dr. Channick was the presenting author of a number of studies presented at ATS 2015, and one of the studies presented was "Occurrence of Pulmonary Hypertension Following Newly Diagnosed Pulmonary Embolism Patients in the United States.

Additional education on the preferred diagnostic test to identify CTEPH is needed as well, said Richard Channick, MD, director of Massachusetts General Hospital's Pulmonary Hypertension and Thromboendarterectomy Program.

"Because surgery can be an effective treatment for CTEPH, it is critical that physicians suspect and diagnose the condition. Unfortunately, as demonstrated by this survey, recognition of CTEPH among primary care physicians is inadequate," Channick in the press release.
