For over twenty years, Independent Thinking has been helping schools help young people be better, both in the classroom and beyond.
We aren't a speakers bureau, although our Associates are some of the world's leading educational speakers and practitione
When it comes to educating young people about drugs and alcohol, a bald, tattooed stand-up comedian is probably the last thing they would expect.
But then the terrible consequences of making the wrong choices are often not what they expect either.
Richard has over twenty years' experience working in the field of substance misuse with young people in various areas of drug support, awareness and education. He has worked across numerous drug services and more recently the Probation Service.
He is a member of the national Drug Education Practitioner's Forum and an advisor, trainer and consultant, constantly keeping himself up to date with the ever-changing drugs scene and working with young people across the UK.
For Richard, the key is to educate young people as young as possible (yes, primary schools, we mean you), educate them as well as possible in an engaging, interactive and entertaining way without talking down, moralising or finger-wagging and then continue to support them so, when faced with a choice, they will make the healthy choice.

Which is where Richard Boxer comes in.
With nearly 20 years of experience working in the field of drugs and drug education, Richard is your secret weapon when it comes to tackling this issue head on in a way that is positive, productive and effective.
Richard’s career in this area began quite accidentally after having dropped out of university.
He found himself volunteering at a local drug treatment project in DrugCare(1994) and was soon in at the deep end, working with drug-dependent clients to help them manage their recovery.
He went on to specialise as a young people's worker, becoming a mentor, sexual health trainer and eventually Peer Education Manager.
But picking up the pieces and helping put them back together again was a frustrating process compared with helping young people avoid that route in the first place.
With that in mind, Richard shifted his focus from treatment to prevention, first as the county Drug Education Worker for Hertfordshire where he worked on raising awareness in youth clubs and on the streets with gangs & hard-to-reach young people, and later as the county schools’ Drug Education Consultant working effectively across 550 schools.
His commitment to the cause also saw him take up the Chair of the Herts Drug Education Forum and he is currently Vice-Chair of the national Drug Education Practitioner's Forum. (He is, for the record, also PTLLS and NVQ qualified and has been trained in Ofsted Section 8 and Protective Behaviours.)
'All young people have an entitlement to drug education’, is Richard’s view and, as you would expect from Independent Thinking, he makes sure this education is as engaging, entertaining and memorable as possible. ‘We cannot “drug proof our children or young people, but we can give them the skills, knowledge and attitudes to enable them to make healthy choices and take responsibility for their own actions’ is how he describes what motivates him to the great work he does.
If you are looking for a trainer that ticks all the boxes then I would highly recommend using Richard, his training is pitch perfect

Every teacher is a teacher of young people, no matter what their subject discipline, and as such they have a duty to help those young people in whichever way they can to make the sorts of choices that will help them be happy, healthy and successful.
Drugs is an issue that you can help young people get right.
Richard is the person you need to help you get it right.
