Richard Barter ,
On August 14 , the Maine Department of Transportation
conducted a public meeting in Poland for community responses to the proposed highway improvements on Route 26 in Gray , New Gloucester and Poland. The project is now in the final design phase with construction planned to begin in 2002.The improvements are significant and will enhance an important highway servicing this entire region.I applaud the proposed changes. However , the current traffic data compiled by the MDOT for this project confirms that the volume of truck and auto traffic on Route 26 continues to increase rapidly and this traffic soon will be traveling at higher speeds.More importantly the improved highway will funnel the increased traffic into an already badly congested Gray Village seriously compounding problems of public safety and vehicle gridlock.
