Richard Aschenbrand, Dean of Visual Communications at CCAD, says this type of process is an ideal teaching tool for students. "In projects like this, we want the clients to be involved. It gives the students a different perspective and the experience of what it will be like to create for someone-getting to know their specific needs and developing their ideas as an artist/graphic designer."

Aschenbrand adds, "When the students present their projects, the client's review is a very true situation. That is exactly what they will encounter in a job setting, so a project like this is helpful. Aschenbrand says that CCAD is continually approached to take part in projects like this, so "we must be very selective in what we take on.

Richard Aschenbrand was born in New York and went on to earn his BFA and MA from Pratt. An experienced graphic and package designer with a broad client base, he taught at CCAD for 45 years, retiring in 2012 after 17 years as dean of Visual Communications. Alphabet Alliteration is his book featuring artwork currently on display in Columbus: an alphabetic compendium of alliterative wordplay and distinctive typography.

The "Alphabet Alliteration" series features 28 images - one for each letter of the alphabet, and one for "Alphabet" and "Alliterative" - in an alphabetic compendium of alliterative wordplay. Each letter is matched to a corresponding word, "Advertising" for A, "Love" for L, etc., and a series of alliterative words, phrases and sentences describing said word.
While Aschenbrand's design and typography expertise are clearly demonstrated, it's his alliterative written work that's truly astounding - equally astonishing in difficulty, emotion and insight.

Richard Aschenbrand, dean of visual communications at the Columbus College of Art & Design, said the ruling is grounded in the fundamentals of typography. It's easier to read a mixture of upper- and lower-case type because the letters are more distinct, he said.

Some - p's and q's, for instance - descend below others. Some - d's, f's, t's - rise above.
Stop signs, one-way signs and other warnings are easy to read in capital letters, Aschenbrand and others said, because their words are more familiar than street names, and many have specific colors or shapes.
