Lafayette High School teacher Richard Aadahl graduated from Lafayette and has been teaching there more than 30 years. (Judith Lowery/Daily Press /March 3, 2015) JAMES CITY - Lafayette High School teacher Richard Aadahl circled his classroom Tuesday afternoon, guiding his computer animation class through an exercise and reminding his students to save their work often, something teachers usually find themselves doing. Aadahl has been teaching at Lafayette for 34 years, many of them in the same classroom, a large, bright space lined with computer stations and motivational sayings on the walls. But his journey at Lafayette did not begin when he was hired in 1980 - it began when he was a sophomore at that very school, right up through his graduation in 1976. Aadahl is one of about a dozen Lafayette teachers - "legacy" teachers - who are working in the same schools they attended years ago. At least 20 teachers and administrators from around the division, including elementary and middle school teachers, fall into this category. "I've been rooted here," he said in an interview with the Gazette. Indeed, Aadahl said, it's important for alumni-teachers to model good behavior. "That's important because many of them don't have the models of what they need today," he said.
