Grand Bank Mayor Rex Matthews said a sub-regional study would now be completed on the landfill at the current waste disposal site at Mollier's Hill to determine whether backfilling is possible.
expected that process to carry on into the middle of next year.
acknowledged the shutdown date was rapidly approaching.
"It certainly was.
"It was getting very, very close."
The mayor said closing the incinerator isn't an issue, but noted more time is necessary.
explained there are other matters that also need to be dealt with.
said for one there are still undetermined details with the province-wide waste management strategy - including how and where garbage from this region will be collected, stored and shipped in the future.
Unless and until backfilling is an option, Mr. Matthews
suggested the only acceptable solution is to keep on burning.
