Owner, Director and Founder of The Montessori Schoolhouse, Regine Ebner studied art and creative writing at Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Education and Literature from the University of Hartford. She trained in Montessori at the Montessori Training Center of Michigan and received her Master of Education degree in Counseling and Guidance from the University of Arizona. Regine is certified by the American Montessori Society.
Since receiving her Masters degree, Regine has worked as a Family Counselor in private practice. In addition to directing The Montessori Schoolhouse, Regine supervises the teaching of the Elementary classrooms and currently co-teaches in the Lower Elementary classroom.

Despite the charter school's success, Ebner, along with other Montessori school leaders, fear the state's impending transition to a new assessment test, which is supposed to be taken online, could interfere with Montessori teaching principles.

"We have computer instruction, but it's not part of their everyday" learning, said Ebner, who is director and a teacher at the Montessori Schoolhouse.

On a recent day, the only time Ebner's students participated in the same activity was at the beginning of class, when the children sat in a circle to listen to her lesson on the Middle Ages.
Ebner didn't stand in front of a chalkboard but used miniature toys and other items to teach the children about the Black Death, knights, castles and other medieval themes.

Montessori instruction is based on hands-on learning, so teachers had to create flash cards to go with mathematical concepts students were learning, Ebner said.
"It's great because with hands-on math they really understand the concepts," she said."We just have to teach them how it shows up on a test."
Charter school officials caution parents not to judge a school by Stanford 9 tests alone.Schools are usually small, which means each student's score can have more of an effect on the overall ranking.
