Longtime Caroline County educator Reggie Underwood was named Thursday night by the Board of Supervisors to fill the vacant supervisor's seat for the Reedy Church District
Caroline County native and longtime educator Reginald "Reggie" Underwood is the new Reedy Church District supervisor for the county. Underwood was chosen by a unanimous vote by the Board of Supervisors late Thursday night after a closed session. He was one of eight candidates considered to serve out the unexpired term of Maxie Rozell, who resigned Jan. 18 after serving on the board for 11 years. "My role is to carry the torch that Maxie put in place and make sure those issues are still taken care of," he said, mentioning specifically water in Caroline Pines, tax relief for seniors and bringing economic development to his district. "I look forward to digging deeper into those issues and hopefully can help remedy some of the things that are still on the table that need to be resolved." Underwood, 57, has been a Caroline resident for 31 years. He was principal of Caroline Middle School from 2003 to 2006, when he took a job as an assistant superintendent for Charles City County Schools. He also was an assistant principal at James Monroe High School in Fredericksburg from 2001 to 2003. Underwood started his teaching career at Caroline High School in 1993 and was also a basketball, football and track coach there. As the boys basketball coach for eight years, he won six district titles and took five teams to the state tournament. As principal, he created a peer mediation program, a program for the hearing impaired and the give-a-belt program--where he bought a stash of belts from Goodwill to give to students who wore their pants too low. Now, he works for a company that specializes in high school dropout prevention and recovery. He is also a doctoral candidate at Virginia Tech and is currently writing his dissertation on the legality of drug testing in high schools.
