In 2004, MYTRAK CEO Reed Hanoun decided to apply the same basic technology to the physical fitness market.

"The challenge is that not all exercise has equal significance upon human health", said Reed Hanoun, founder and inventor of MYTRAK, "The true benefit is derived not from exercise, per se, but from optimal exercise.
Simply stated, optimal exercise carries components of proper exertion and being progressive. And, most first-time exercisers do neither. Given the plethora of exercise modalities, devices, and machines, a universal measurement standard is required to give a simple but meaningful indicator of the outcome of exercise to an individual's body. Hanoun's team worked on the problem for 3 years and finally devised the Human Performance Index, commonly referred to as the PI. "The PI is an index that is a measure of a person's fitness state", explains Hanoun, "It is a composite of strength, endurance, flexibility, and cardiovascular conditioning. "But most importantly", added Hanoun, "It's totally automated, a gym's computers can communicate directly to a health provider's or employer's computers and thus relieve the burden of paperwork.

MYTRAK president and chief executive officer Reed Hanoun said his Ridgeway Dr. business, which employs 45 people, designed and assembles the small devices that are worn by users throughout the day.
Season 12 of the popular NBC television series started Tuesday. Hanoun said he expects sales of the Slim Coach will take off once people see how simple it is to use on the show. The Mississauga resident said it's an interesting way for people to stay healthy and ensure they are maintaining the activity level needed to maintain or lose weight depending on the goal they set for themselves. "It measures the calories in with the calories going out," he said. After setting up weight loss or maintenance goals on the computer, adding a current weight, goal weight and goal date, the small fitness tracker, which sells online at www.mytrak.com for $99, is clipped onto the user and worn all day. By pressing the device's centre button, people can view a coloured ring that lights up. Every day the circle starts out red. As people do their daily activities the circle goes green. If they haven't done enough activity, it will light up yellow or red so users can increase the intensity of their physical activity. For instance, Hanoun spent most of his day at his desk, so his Slim Coach was yellow. He said he'd add a walk to his day to keep on track. The device connect to the computer and an online tool allows users to compare their activity levels to the show's contestants as well as to friends and families. Hanoun expects it will create some friendly competition among people while helping beat the ever-growing waistlines that are contributing to a rise in diabetes and other health issues. The father of three said he's been developing the product since 2008 to get away from the concept that weight loss must come from sweating and spending time at the gym. "You only get one chance with one body," he said.
