Ray Soll, president of Southern California-based hr Staffing, says in the first few years he was in the staffing industry, he made the mistake of opening new offices before training staff who were going to work at those offices. He ended up having to train staff while the new offices were running."It was a struggle to get things going," he admits. If he did it over again, he would have trained staff before the doors opened, he explains. Soll acknowledges he also made a mistake when it came to branch management. He would spend too much time with the branch manager, helping the branch manager manage, he says.As a result, he learned to hire a better quality branch manager. Always Get Back to People A vice president of a Canadian-based staffing agency who wished to remain anonymous says that nine years ago, he made the mistake of not phoning a candidate back.He set up an interview with a candidate, and told the candidate he would call back the next Friday, because that's when the company said it would get back to him.But it turned out that, even though the interview went well, the company didn't get back to him on that Friday. So he decided not to call the candidate because he didn't have any news.Monday morning, he received a voicemail from the candidate, who was extremely upset. The lesson he learned?Never leave anyone hanging without information.Give them an update."It's not our choice to let people down," he says."We impact people's lives."Now he's always very prompt about getting back to people."Friday afternoons are our busiest time," he explains.
