Ray Soll, President of HR Staffing (Torrance CA) agrees.Soll runs a temporary employee operation with offices from Santa Barbara to Ontario CA. Many of his employees are women, and Soll says, "Since 1992, we have never been without one or two people pregnant."As a consequence, the company has taken a family-friendly stance for both women and men, and Soll has even made the policies a part of his customer relations program."Customers love it," he says; they often telephone employees who have returned from maternity leave to ask about the newborns and request photographs. [Top]WHY THE INDUSTRY HASN'T TAKEN THE PLUNGE"Ultimately," Soll observes, "some [owners or managers] just won't do it."It's easy to get mired down in old attitudes. But "When you look at the costs of hiring and training, and rehiring and retraining, it's worth it."Soll believes that he has a lot invested in his people, and he regards anything he can do to reduce turnover as a good thing."We perceive ourselves as employers of the nineties, and we do whatever we have to do to get the work done and make it as flexible as possible for people," says Soll.Soll concurs that HQ positions are best not given too much flexibility. [Top]Soll takes considerable pride in the success of his flex program."We've never lost a person because they couldn't work themselves through a personal issue: maternity, Little League, or anything else," he says.
