Tradition says Christkindlmarkt began in 1545, in Nuremberg, Germany, when the council decided to let artisans and craftsmen come out of their shops to the market square to display their products, said Ray Lotter, managing director of German-American Services, a subsidiary of the German-American Chamber of Commerce. "It became more or less like a meeting of all the townspeople, all the families to get together and celebrate during the long winter months," said Lotter, who helped start Chicago's Christkindlmarkt in 1996, and still organizes it. How Arlington Heights' version develops remains to be seen, but Chicago's is the only authentic Christkindlmarkt in the United States because it's the only one that uses wooden booths, Lotter said.A tent like the ones used in Schaumburg and the one that will be used in Arlington Heights "takes something away," he said. "You've got to get out there, get cold and then drink the spiced wine.It makes you feel good," Lotter said.

Raymond and Enola Bruns of Dike came with their son, David, who has Down syndrome and lives near the church.
"We constantly review details, such as whether the wood stalls have the right measurements or whether the awnings are really red-white," Ray Lotter of the German American Chamber of Commerce of the Midwest said by telephone from Chicago Dec. 20.

When the Christkindlmarket first opened in 1996, the founder Ray Lotter was inspired by the Christkindlesmarkt in Nuremberg, one of the oldest holiday markets in Germany.
He, along with the German American Chamber of Commerce of the Midwest, brought all of the best elements to Chicago, including the Christkind, the red and white striped wooden booths, beautiful German goods, delicious food, and imported Glühwein. Chicago has been celebrating these wonderful traditions with us ever since! With the updated logo we are continuing that celebration while reinforcing the connection of our brand to the traditions of the Christkindlmarket.
