They were heroes," said Pastor Ray Khachatourian from the Rialto Seventh-day Adventist Church.
Khachatourian, the vice commander of the chaplain unit for the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Office, was the keynote speaker at Barstow's Sept. 11 memorial event, "Remember the Fallen, Celebrate our Freedom."
Khachatourian volunteered to go to New York City after the terrorist attacks.There, he helped with rescue and recovery and comforted Port Authority officers and their families.
In his remarks, he described the tragedies of the attacks and the heroism he witnessed.
