Political novices Ray Hennemann
of Redding and Mike Johnson of Chico were afraid that U.S. Rep.
, the volunteer manager at Redding's Democratic headquarters
, and Johnson, a Yuba College job-skills teacher, are squaring off in a March primary for Congress.
"It was definitely an open field for me, and I am very serious about promoting senior issues because I'm a caregiver for my mother (Anna Ferrario), who's 97 and suffers from Alzheimer's," said Hennemann
, 59, a retired Shasta County tax appraiser.
"I do not believe Wally has done enough in this regard," Hennemann
Johnson, 51, said he
wanted to provide a more worthy opponent for Herger than the congressman's past Democratic opponents, whom he
believes were too liberal for the 2nd Congressional District.
Beginning with the next election, the district will represent the Interstate 5 corridor north of Woodland.
...Hennemann has the experience of being a longtime political activist.A one-time Young Republican who hosted the Colorado delegation at the GOP's 1964 national convention in San Francisco, he has long since become a Democrat and served on the party's central committees in Santa Clara and Shasta counties.
A Redding resident for about a dozen years, Hennemann
is now the Shasta County central committee's secretary and has run the party headquarters for two years.
In a campaign kickoff announcement Monday, Hennemann
criticized GOP proposals to privatize Social Security and prescription coverage for seniors, arguing that some prescription plans cost almost half of a widow's monthly benefit from Social Security.
