Her husband Raven Abaroa was also a former SVU student who attended the university for just one semester in 1998 as a business administration major. The couple lived in Durham with their 6-month-old son, Kaiden.
Janet Abaroa's body was found shortly before 11 p.m. on the day of her murder, in her bedroom.Public relations coordinator with the Durham Police Department Kammie Michaels, confirmed that stabbing was the cause of death.
At SVU, Abaroa was credited as being a "pioneer" who made history at the university as a midfielder for the inaugural women's soccer team, helping to lead her team to back-to-back National Small College Athletic Association Championship victories in 1998 and 1999.She was also a scholar-athlete, receiving post-season honors as a United State Collegiate Athletic Association All-American in 2001 and 2002.
"Janet experienced great athletic accomplishment, academic success and spiritual development during her four years at SVU," reads a memorandum to the SVU student body in the wake of Abaroa's death.
Abaroa was one of nine children and originally from Annandale. Her family has described her as an "avid soccer player and devout Morman."At the time of her death, she was employed as a bookkeeper at Martin Marietta Materials, a company that manufactures construction materials, in Raleigh.
Both she and her husband were formerly employed at Eurosport, a sporting goods company in Hillsborough, but they both left their positions - Janet Abaroa voluntarily - after Hillsborough police charged Raven Abaroa with embezzling more than ,9,000 from the company, according to arrest warrants. His June 22 trial date in Orange County was continued until July 22, but a clerk at the Orange County Superior and District Court said that he may be indicted in the interim.
Police have been close-mouthed about the case, which has been open for just over two months, naming no suspects and releasing little information.
Police received a 911 phone call from Raven Abaroa about an injured person at the house on the night of April 26.Abaroa told police that he had returned home from playing in a pickup soccer game and checked first on his son, who was unharmed, but then discovered his wife's body.
Among the items seized from the residence with a search warrant were a block of knives, and the husband's 1998 Dodge Durango.Inside the Durango was found a knife in a case and a pawn shop ticket.
In early May, police asked a judge for permission to examine the Durango a second time.Durham police Cpl.B.E. Bradley was granted a warrant to search the vehicle again, and the warrant states that information disclosed during an interview with Raven Abaroa suggests that "further scientific testing is needed" to determine the relationship of the vehicle to the homicide.
