Rauno Aaltonen: the rally professor
Rauno Aaltonen Image Credit: Supplied picture Aaltonen is only too happy to impart this immense knowledge to the younger generation. Rauno Aaltonen is 78 years old. I'm 28, and he makes me feel feeble. For nearly half a century, the original Rally Professor has been pitching racing cars into gravel turns at break-neck speeds, modulating the brake and throttle pedals with surgical precision, finger-tipping the steering wheel with the delicacy and feel of a Michelin-starred chef, or just plain man-handling his machines to victory more often than not. "I love driving all cars. Front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, all-wheel drive. It doesn't matter. The power doesn't matter. It's all about control," Aaltonen told wheels. The Finnish legend certainly couldn't count on power when he started rallying way back in the Sixties, piloting minuscule Mini Coopers to victories at Monte Carlo, of all places. His secret was in the footwork. These days if Aaltonen isn't appearing at Mini events worldwide, or participating in his beloved classic car rallies, you'll find him in his home country offering driving tuition. On a frozen lake. Try not to underestimate this old man. As I found out in Germany seated next to Aaltonen on a flying lap, he won't just teach you about otherworldly driving; you'll learn a thing or two about fear too.
