As a member of the track team, Junkin won the Class 2A State shot put championship as well as the Alabama Relays shot put title.
After graduation, he
continued to contribute to the athletic program.He worked to bring the youth football program back to Gordo and served on the committee that planned and developed the current Gordo High Stadium.Junkin
has headed the Green Wave's video and communications unit for over 30 years.In 1998, he
was inducted into the Gordo High School Hall of Fame
.Presently, he serves on the Sports Hall of Fame Selection Committee.
In addition to his
involvement with the Gordo
High School sports program, Junkin
has been involved in various organizations.He was a member of the Gordo Civitan Club for many years where he held various offices including that of presidency.He
was one of the leaders in planning the Gordo High School 100 Year Reunion.As a dedicated member of the "The Andy Griffith Show" Rerun Watchers Club, Junkin has been involved in writing, directing, producing and organizing major Mayberry events throughout the United States, such as the TAGS reunions at Mt. Airy, NC and the Mayberry squad car antique car show, and he also performs regularly as an Otis Campbell tribute artist.Junkin has served as master of ceremonies at many events in Gordo, including the Gordo High School beauty walk, Gordo Elementary School Fall Festival and various Chamber of Commerce events, he has helped in various capacities with Chickenfest/Mule Day and the Gordo Christmas Parade.
For over 20 years, he
has served as Santa Claus in the Christmas Parade as well as in other parades and activities throughout West Alabama.Junkin has worked at Phifer Wire Products for 34 years.His present position is Director of Communications.
