Burns and Roe's
Advanced Technology efforts are characterized by teamwork - seamless project coordination to ensure complete customer satisfaction. We practice open communication among the customer, project personnel, suppliers, and our home and satellite offices, by which all are connected to the diverse areas of expertise in the Burns and Roe family of companies.
New Technology Development
Burns and Roe
has been deeply involved in the development of new technologies. In addition to our heritage of "First-of-a-Kind" nuclear projects, we are also involved in pursuing and developing innovative treatment and disposal methods for various levels of radiological contaminated waste. We have just been selected as part of a consortium to provide a "proof-of-concept" for a modular vitrification system for high-level waste.Upon successful completion of the initial phase, Burns and Roe
will develop a full-size operable system, which will offer the marketplace lower cost alternatives to those already existing for these types of wastestreams.
Our projects cover the entire range of services from "proof-of-principle", through demonstration, and ultimately, to commercialization.Beyond conventional engineering, design and build services, Burns and Roe
also provides computer modeling of individual equipment, processes or cycles to optimize design and development requirements, cost optimization modeling to evaluate end products, schedules and waste utilization. We further determine lowest cost energy scenarios, supporting stakeholder participation, and assimilation of new requirements and/or changes to ensure technology transfer. Our personnel regularly participate in workshops, conferences and technical presentations to keep abreast of and share in new developments.
Technical Support Services
Burns and Roe
provides engineering support services to numerous governmental and industrial clients with very diverse needs. Many of these programs are provided on-site at the client's location, with others provided at various field offices internationally. For the DOE's
Federal Energy Technology Center (FETC) in Pittsburgh, PA; for example, our Company maintained a cadre of about 20 advanced degreed professionals with over 500 years of collective industrial experience. While supporting FETC, Burns and Roe
has been intimately involved in the DOE's Clean Coal Program, composed of some 39 projects, with an aggregate value of over $6 billion.
Our Company is also well recognized for its expertise in conducting Independent Cost Estimating (ICE) and technical review of large-scale, complex engineering, design and construction projects/programs.We have assisted DOE
in review of energy technology, environmental restoration, and civilian radioactive waste management programs for several years as their ICE Program Manager.
Decommissioning and Dismantling Services
Burns and Roe
provides decommissioning services for both BWR and PWR nuclear power plants, and non-reactor facilities for commercial and government clients. Our work is performed in accordance with the methodology outlined in NUREG documents and Atomic Industrial Forum
(AIF) Guidelines for producing commercial power plant decommissioning cost estimates, AIF/NESP-036, and complies with the applicable Code of Federal Regulations. Our services offered include engineering studies, cost estimates, decommissioning plans, and on-site implementation.
We have focused our efforts on providing services in support of actual field activities. Our personnel are specialists in cost engineering, planning, scheduling, nuclear engineering, radioactive waste management, and project and construction management. Most have gained their knowledge from actual project experience.
