Raina Fulks, floodplain administrator at Gallia SWCD, invites people who may have a question about floodplain regulations, those who may not know what floodplain management is, or individuals who are just curious about the topic, to attend next week's meeting.
"Floodplain regulations affect more people in our county than you might think. Anyone that lives in a floodplain, builds in a floodplain, or does any kind of development or earthwork in a floodplain must comply with floodplain development regulations," Fulks said. "Even seemingly small things can make a difference in floodplain management." According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, floodplain management is defined as "the operation of a community program of corrective and preventative measures for reducing flood damage. These measures could include requirements for zoning, building and other special-purpose ordinances and, as such, Fulks encourages residents in Gallia County to educate themselves on local floodplain regulations. She further reported that those in Gallia County who might not necessarily believe they live in a floodplain or on areas along the Ohio River should still educate themselves in regard to floodplain management. "This covers more than just the areas along the Ohio River. Many small streams in the county have had floodplain mapping completed by FEMA, and, in the future, it's likely that many more will. So, even if you live 'up in the hollow,' you might want to learn more about floodplain management and regulation," she said. At next week's meeting, attendees will be able to view county floodplain maps, will receive handouts and will hear from the Gallia SWCD staff, including Fulks. If you've ever wondered any of these things then come out to the meeting on May 22," Fulks commented.
