R. Norman Harden, MD has served as the director of the Center for Pain Studies since 1994 and founded the Chronic Pain Care Center at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago.
He is now an associate professor in physical medicine and rehabilitation at Northwestern University. Dr. Harden is a past president of the Midwest Pain Society and has served as chair of the IASP Research Symposium on complex regional pain syndrome, twice. He is a member of numerous medical societies including the American Academy of Pain Medicine, the American Pain Society, the International Association for the Study of Pain and the American Headache Association and is an Honorary life member of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Dr. Harden is a senior editor of Pain Medicine and Pain Practice and serves on the editorial board and as a reviewer of many other journals. He has also edited four books, and has published over 60 peer-reviewed articles as well as over a hundred chapters and reviews. Dr. Harden reports that he receives grant or research support from Covidien, Forest Pharmaceuticals, Inc., and Depomed and also receives consulting fees from Covidien and Depomed.

R. Norman Harden, MD, received his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia in 1984. He performed an internship and residency in neurology at the Medical University of South Carolina. Subsequent training included a fellowship in pain control at the Pain Control and Rehabilitation Institute of Georgia and an observership in Cancer Pain Control at Memorial Sloan-Kettering in 1989. Dr. Harden served as assistant professor in neurology and physical medicine and rehabilitation, and served as medical director of the Pain and Rehabilitation Program at the Medical University of South Carolina. He founded the Headache Program and the Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy programs there. Dr. Harden has served as the director of the Center for Pain Studies and founded the Chronic Pain Care Center (now Center for Pain Management) at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. He is an associate professor in physical medicine and rehabilitation at Northwestern University. He has been a Falk and Rosen Scholar. He is the first and current holder of the Robert G. Addison, MD, Chair in Pain Studies. Dr. Harden is a past president of the Midwest Pain Society and has served as chair of the IASP Research Symposium on Complex Regional Pain Syndrome twice. Dr. Harden is a member of numerous medical societies including the American Academy of Neurology, the American Pain Society, the International Association for the Study of Pain, the American Academy of Pain Medicine, the American Headache Association and is an honorary life member of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Dr. Harden is the past editor-in-chief of the Journal of Back and Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation and is a senior editor of Pain Medicine, Pain Practice and the American Pain Society Bulletin and serves on the editorial board of many other journals. He has edited four books and has published more than 50 peer reviewed articles in the pain literature. In addition he has published over a hundred chapters, reviews and abstracts in prominent medical journals and books such as the journal Pain, the Clinical Journal of Pain, Pain Medicine, Neurology, JAMA, Headache and Bonica's Textbook of Pain Management and Braddom's Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Dr. Harden is the section editor for the CRPS section.
