The Director of the Central Salt Marine Chemicals Research Institute
e was a recipient of the prestigious NSTS Scholarship and obtained his undergraduate degree in Chemistry in 1974 from St. Stephen's College (Delhi University) and his Master's Degree from IIT Kanpur in 1976.
"This is the first time that salt has been produced from a vegetable source, and we have filed an international patent," says Pushpito Ghosh, director of India's Central Salt and Marine Chemicals Research Institute (CSMCRI), where the research was conducted.
Most plants are salt intolerant, but some can grow under high saline conditions.CSMCRI scientists investigated one such species, Salicornia brachiata, which accumulates salt within its tissue, and developed a process for extracting salt from the plant.Dr Ghosh

group is now trying to assess the commercial potential of 'vegetable salt' as a health product.The researchers also suggest that their discovery could help in the commercial development of wasteland with salty soils."The finding that the plant can also be a source of nutritive salt has made large-scale saline soil cultivation an attractive proposition from the point of eco-restoration and making money from wasteland," says Dr Ghosh

While delivering the Keynote address, Dr.Pushpito Ghosh, Director, Central Salt & Marine Chemicals Research Institute, Bhavnagar traced various facets of the Colorants industry from the very discovery of indigo, to the latest innovations in the usage of solar energy cells and electronics.
ince many Colorants units are located in Gujarat under SME sector, who cannot afford large investments in R&D individually, he advocated the setting up of a dedicated institute for Colorants research and development on a co-operative model, which would go a long way in its growth in the days to come.

"Although the demonstration aimed at proving road worthiness of micro-algal biodiesel, it remains to be seen whether such mat-forming marine micro algae can be cultivated inland or induced to grow rapidly and on large scale in the sea itself," said CSMCRI Director Dr Pushpito Ghosh.
"A number of other marine micro-algae strains are being investigated under the project especially those having high lipid productivity," he said.
"The production of bio-fuels must not affect food security and the micro-algal project gains significance on this count," Ghosh
