is the title of this month's Analemma Society presentation by Gary Purington, planetarium teacher at Falls Church High School,at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 23, in meeting rooms A and B of the Reston Regional Library.Through the centuries, comets have been the subject of much speculation and superstition. But in recent times, science and technology have greatly expanded our knowledge of these curious objects. This presentation will include information and demonstrations about what comets are, how to identify them in the sky, how they are discovered and named, how our understanding of comets has progressed through the centuries, and Comet Ikeya-Zhang, which recently passed through our part of the solar system. The presentation will include a live demonstration of how to "cook" a comet and a slide show on the history of comets. It is designed to appeal to an audience ranging from fourth grade students through adults, and will be followed by a question and answer period.Weather permitting, telescope viewing of Jupiter, Saturn, and Venus will follow for those willing to stay until it starts getting dark (around 9:00 p.m.).
