Prudence finds pleasure in working with young people, serving as a music director at SteppingStone Theatre for Youth Development since '96 and teaching private lessons. Since taking up the tenor ukulele, she has found great riches in the folk music of her roots, and in the work of some of the more profound songwriters of her generation.

Programs - Summer Program Director [cached]

This year, however, Beth's time will be augmented by the talents and attention of two new summer program directors: Mairi Doerr and Prudence Johnson.

Prudence Johnson
Prudence Johnson is better known in the regional world of music, but the island will steal some of her time this summer, too. Prudence trained as a caretaker a few years ago, yet she has been interested in Mallard Island for a dozen years, especially the stories that go with the place. She says, "History has always had a strong pull on me; it has been the focus of my academic studies and a great deal of my extra-curricular reading, and for several years I've put most of my artistic energies into creating works that present historical subjects as entertainment. Prudence currently also works part-time at Birchbark Books in Minneapolis, and their focus on the Ojibwe language and culture strengthens her interest in Mallard.
This year, splitting the summer program director position in this way is an answer to the staffing of the summer season. Each year may be different as we explore ways to best support the island and the hundred guests who come each summer for a week of work or creativity. Welcome Mairi and Prudence!
