Ranil Wickremesinghe, Wimal Weerawansa, Prasanna Ranatunga and Nimal Siripala
One person who has got into serious trouble due to his affiliations with the Pro-Rajapaksa camp is Prasanna Ranatunga, Chief Minister of the Western Provincial Council.
Ranatunga was also among the SLFP group who took part in the rally which was held at Nugegoda to support the former President.
Following this move, a group of UPFA members representing the Western Provincial Council have embarked on a mission to oust Ranatunga and appoint Ranjith Somawansa as the new Chief Minister of the province.
Somawansa has now turned into a supporter of Maithripala
- Nimal Siripala group of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party.
Commenting on this move, Western Province Chief Minister Ranatunga said that he
was aware of moves to remove him of the Chief Ministerial position in the Western Provincial Council
"However, these moves will not be successful," he
also said that there was a move by the opposition to collect affidavits from Provincial Councillors, which had not been successful.
Later, the UNP and some members of the UPFA
had apparently started conspiring to replace Ranatunga
with a UPFA member.
However it will not succeed as he
has the backing of the majority of the council and his
was the same person who said a few weeks ago that a 'new face' should be the Prime Ministerial Candidate of the SLFP.
The circumstances which led to his
political somersault are still unclear.
Meanwhile, 15 heads of local government bodies in Gampaha District held a press conference last week, pledging their support to Ranatunga
They said that Ranatunga
was their leader in the province and if he
is removed it will be a step towards destroying the Sri Lanka Freedom Party.
