Dr Philip Rayment is a statistician with research and professional interests in the application of statistics to fields such as environmental management, of relevance to the Gippsland region. He completed a PhD in statistics at The University of Melbourne in 1972, having also taught into the statistics program there across second, third and fourth year levels. He has worked in the School of Applied Sciences and Engineering at the Gippsland campus of Monash University (and its predecessor institution) since 1972, and was a visiting senior lecturer at the UK Open University in 1976-1977.He was promoted to associate professor in 1991, and has contributed widely to the development of mathematics, statistics and (earlier) computing programs and units offered from the Gippsland campus, both nationally and internationally.
Teaching Commitments
Dr Rayment's teaching areas and interests over some thirty-five years have ranged widely across mathematics and statistics, both as science major studies and as inter-faculty 'service' offerings for students of business, computing, engineering and the social sciences including international and postgraduate students. He has developed an extensive range of off-campus learning materials in line with Monash's objective to increase flexibility in delivery of its programs.
Phil is the unit advisor for the following units:
MTH9030 - Chance, data and decisions SCI1020 - Introduction to statistical reasoning
Research Interests
In line with Dr Rayment's view of the role of an interdisciplinary school in a regional setting, his research and associated professional activities have focussed on statistics applied to problems in local scientific settings and to analysis of environmental studies data. This work has been in conjunction with other staff and postgraduate students of the School of Applied Sciences and Engineering and with scientists in such organisations as Gippsland Water, Envirogen, Water ECOscience, etc.
