RES president Peter Shackelford, pictured at the NELHA PV site, has worked "hands on" in renewable solar technologies for over 25 years.
In the early 1980's Peter was the electrical crew foreman building the first wind farm in the State of Hawai'i at Kahua Ranch
Further work at Kahua Ranch
included managing daily operations of the 3.4 MW wind farm and working as a technician and then manager for the University of Hawai'i
, Hawai'i Natural Energy Institute
(HNEI), Wind Energy Storage Test
(WEST) facility where wind, pumped hydro and hydrogen energy storage experiments were performed.
In 1992, as a senior engineering technician with the Pacific International Center for High Technology Research
operated the Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) power plant experiment at the Natural Energy Lab at Keahole Point.
While still with PICHTR
in 1996, Peter
designed two village scale renewable energy power systems utilizing wind, photovoltaic, battery and diesel genset technologies.
Since 1997, Peter
and RES, Inc.
have concentrated on photovoltaic power systems exclusively.
In addition to numerous large off grid homes, some noteworthy commercial systems built by RES
have been the HELCO 20 kW
system at the Natural Energy Lab at Keahole point, the 18 kW Holuakoa Café in Holualoa, 10 kW Honoka'a High School
and the 30 kW off grid, Ahu Pohaku Ho'omaluhia Health Retreat in Hawi.
