was delighted to welcome Rabbi Peter E. Hyman
to our congregational family in July of 1999.Rabbi Hyman came to us from Temple Emanuel in Beaumont, Texas where he served as 'solo' rabbi for 14 years.
Prior to that, he
was first an Assistant, and then an Associate Rabbi at Temple-Emanuel
in Sarasota, Florida.A 1977 graduate of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in Cincinnati, Ohio, Peter was ordained in 1980.He received an honorary Doctor of Divinity in 2005.
Rabbi Hyman's involvement in youth activities is equally impressive.An Eagle Scout, Rabbi Hyman's activities have included being the National Chaplain for the National Jewish Committee on Scouting; Vice-President of Programming for the Three Rivers Council of Boy Scouts of America; and the Chaplain Coordinator for the Boy Scouts of America World and National Jamborees for many years.He has served as part of the Rabbinic faculty at the UAHC Green Family Camp, UAHC Kutz Camp and UAHC Camp Coleman.In addition, he was part of the Regional Rabbinic Advisorship to both NFTY-Southeast and the NFTY-Texas Oklahoma Region for many years. His experience in community service includes positions on the Board of Directors and Ethics Committee at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Beaumont Hospital Association Committee on Futile Care, a Board position for the United Way of Beaumont, Schlesinger Geriatric Center, Mental Health Association of Jefferson County, and for Family Services of Beaumont.Rabbi Hyman has been President of the Beaumont Chapter of the National Conference of Christians and Jews, and President of the Beaumont Ministerial Alliance.Since his arrival, Rabbi Hyman has been active in the Marple-Newtown community, and has been elected to serve as president of the Marple-Newtown Clergy Association.He received the Silver Buffalo Award the highest honor for the Boy Scouts of America in 2006.
Most importantly, Peter
is very warm, loving, and fun to be around.His
energy, ideas, kindness and humor make many of us feel as if he
has been a part of Temple Sholom for years.Rabbi Hyman
is the proud father of sons Daniel and Ari.
