NSW Fire Brigade's chief in Kempsey Captain Peter Hinchcliffe and Rural Fire Service (RFS) spokesperson for the Lower North Coast Tony Jarrett both said this year had been remarkably quiet when it came to the number of reported incidents.
Captain Hinchcliffe said Kempsey had been so quiet, the number of incidents reported to date had virtually halved compared to previous years. "We do our reports on a 12 monthly basis, from July 1 to June 30 every year," he said. "Normally at this time I'd say we'd have between 400 and 450 call outs. This year we've had 280." Captain Hinchcliffe said the past two years had been very quiet and pointed to a number of campaigns and improved safety practices as some of the major reasons. "We've been to a few small incidents, things like power lines arcing and the like and, touch wood, we've had no serious motor vehicle accidents," he said.
