...Professor Peter Furness Professor Furness is a consultant histopathologist at the University Hospitals of Leicester, UK, and is honorary Professor of Renal Pathology at the University of Leicester.His
basic medical training was in Cambridge and Oxford
, followed by training in diagnostic histopathology and a PhD in renal immunopathology in Nottingham.He is Divisional Editor and Webmaster of the British Division of the International Academy of Pathology.
In 1990, he
set up the first National External Quality Assessment (EQA) Scheme in diagnostic pathology in renal pathology, a scheme that he
still runs.In the mid-1990s he
chaired the College's Working Group on histopathology EQA, which established the 'ground rules' for EQA in the UK, at a time when this was a very controversial subject.He currently sits on the Board of Clinical Pathology Accreditation (UK) Ltd, the UK's main provider of medical laboratory accreditation systems, is Clinical Specialty Advisor in Pathology to the UK National Patient Safety Agency and a member of the Patient Information Advisory Group.He is the foundation Chair of Leicestershire's Clinical Ethics Committee.
