The National Patient Safety Agency (NPSA) has appointed Professor Peter Furness to its team of Clinical Specialty Advisors, to advise on improving patient safety in pathology. Professor Furness joins 12 other Clinical Specialty Advisors who have been appointed jointly by the NPSA and the relevant Royal College in a part time role to promote patient safety in their speciality areas.
The advisors also provide advice to the NPSA
on practical solutions to safety issues, and will influence a range of solutions that the NPSA
will roll-out over the next year. Professor Furness is a specialist in pathology.He is Professor of Renal Pathology at University of Leicester and Honorary Consultant Histopathologist at University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust.
Patient safety has long been an element of Professor Furness'
said: "I look forward to this challenge with relish.It will allow me to concentrate even more on NHS-related work while pursuing an area of interest and utilising many of my existing skills and contacts and providing me with the opportunity to develop new ones." The NPSA is fortunate to secure the services of Professor Furness, according to Dr Chris Womack, consultant histopathologist who represented the Royal College of Pathologists on the appointment committee.
