No one can accuse Pete Grigsby and his students at BSSD Radio for being lazy.
As it turns out, Grigsby has been quite the busybody the last year. His fledging Blue Springs School District radio station, reaching the district airwaves last year, has broken into the big time: a weekly, four-day slot on 1030 AM, a local Christian radio station.
The broadcast time is Monday through Thursday, 4-5 p.m.
"This week was our first week on, and it's been great," said Grigsby, the station's advisor and a teacher at Blue Springs South High School.
...
But Grigsby and staff worked hard through the year. Their desire was to create an all-encompassing radio and television experience, reaching into the community further than initially designed.
Over the summer, district staff and Grigsby moved the studio to Blue Springs South High School.
"We figured that I was over here most of my time, so it made sense," he said.
...
"We have him to thank big time, he was such an important player for us," Grigsby said of Wrisinger.
...
Grigsby also is celebrating another addition: the ability to broadcast Blue Springs School District radio and television, or BSSD TV, live on Comcast Cable channel 15 or AT&T U-verse channel 99.

Among the proposed topics for the next show were a severe weather story, a story about breathalyzers being used at prom and a zombie movie update.Zombie movies?“Oh, one of our school clubs is making a movie about zombies,” said Pete Grigsby. “We’re following their progress.”Grigsby teaches broadcasting at Blue Springs South High School and on Monday, the newsroom was full with students coming up with story ideas for the week.

I’ve always been interested in being an anchor but without this class, I probably wouldn’t have known how to go about becoming one.”Grigsby said the goal of the class was to give students the basics in how a newsroom works. “I’m teaching them writing, the basics of photography and editing, things that – if they decide to pursue a career in TV – they can build on,” he said. “I think the best part about this class is that these students are going out into the school and the community, learning more about it and bringing that knowledge back to their peers.”To watch episodes of Jag TV, go to www.schooltube.com and search for “Jag TV.” Jag TV is also shown daily on BSSD TV Comcast channel 15 and ATT channel 99.

Oh, one of our school clubs is making a movie about zombies, said Pete Grigsby. Were following their progress.
Grigsby teaches broadcasting at Blue Springs South High School and on Monday, the newsroom was full with students coming up with story ideas for the week. Jag TV is broadcast every week during the schools lunch hours and is written, taped, edited and produced entirely by students.
Mr. Grigsby actually taught me last year when I took his meteorology class, said senior Jordan Bowen.
...
When Grigsby took over the broadcast class last fall, he wanted to update it and turn it into a newscast.
Before it was mostly video editing and there wasnt much structure, but since I have a background in news, I wanted to redo it, he explained.
Grigsby went to work, setting up the classroom with each student having their own desk or station much like they would in a newsroom. Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays are reporting days during which students go out into the school and the community and find stories to report on. Wednesdays and Thursdays the student anchors film their scenes and on Fridays the show airs during lunch hours.
Fridays are also spent critiquing the broadcast, Grigsby said.
...
According to Grigsby, most of the story ideas the students pitch are things theyve come up with.
Were making this news for their fellow students so all the stories are things theyd like to hear about themselves, he said. For example, since prom was last weekend, last week we did an entire segment devoted to prom corsages and prom on a budget, things like that.
The team has also done stories on the lack-luster job market facing teenagers.
A lot of the jobs teens normally do just arent there anymore because older people are looking for work too, Grigsby said.
